What: Design a product in Sitka spruce, with focus on the interaction between aesthetics, function, wood materials and manufacturing processes.
Svale is a handcrafted daybed made from Sitka spruce. The daybed is constructed of three parts: the top, two cross beams, and four legs. The top part consists of one-directional laminated beams. A shallow curve on the top side allows for improved comfort. Two cross beams are attached to the top with a dovetail. This allows the wood to breathe and move along the groove. The dovetails are visible from side to side, contributing to an honest and transparent design. Lastly, the legs are attached by sliding onto the oblong-shaped ends of the crossbeams, creating a stable construction.
How: Sketching, small-scale prototyping, lectures on wood behavior, building the product in the workshop, with feedback from other students and the professor throughout the process.
